City of Santa Fe, state of New Mexico, United States. There, a 130-year-old mystery attracts worshipers and tourists. Destination: Loretto Chapel. About 250,000 visitors a year search the chapel for an answer. What makes the chapel different from all the others is that the character of the supposed miracle that occurred in it is a staircase.


“There may be something miraculous, because the staircase was built in a short time, with little equipment,” explains one visitor. When the chapel was completed at the end of the 19th century, the nuns missed a ladder leading up to the upper floor. They spent nine days praying to St. Joseph, who was a carpenter.

A stranger knocked on the chapel door on the last day. He said he was a carpenter and could handle the task. He built, without anyone's help, the ladder that is considered a carpentry prodigy: nobody knows how it stood up. The ladder does not have a central support. Then the carpenter - who used no nail or glue to build the ladder - vanished without a trace. Neither waited to receive payment.

A legend was born in the city of Santa Fe, who came to believe that the carpenter was actually St. Joseph, sent by Jesus to attend the supplications of the fairs. Since then, the stairway has been called “miraculous”, and has become a pilgrimage point and tourist attraction.
