Miguel Juan Pellicer, a young fellow of about 20 years old, was working on his uncle's farm in the village of Castellón in 1637.
A mule-drawn car ran up his leg, fracturing his tibia. Quickly, his uncle took him to the hospital in Valencia.
Pellicer stayed at the Valencia hospital for five days until it was decided that he needed more help than they could provide. Pellicer was sent on foot with a broken leg to the largest hospital in Zaragoza, a trip that took 50 days .
When he arrived in Zaragoza, feverish and ill, doctors discovered that his leg was gangrenous and in serious condition. Pellicer's right leg was amputated “four fingers below the knee” and was buried in a special hospital lot.
