Its name comes from Aramaic , with a patronymic reference : Bar Talmay - son of Talmay. There are historians who also hold a patronymic reference , but give another meaning to the name: Bar Ptolemy - Son of Ptolemy. This latter hypothesis is not unrealistic, since Ptolemy (alleged father of Bartholomew) had a Greek name , and Greek culture had a great influence on Judea at the time.
No biblical narration focuses on him especially, and his name is only on the lists of the twelve. However, according to tradition, he is the Nathanael of which other passages speak, and this is evident from the comparison of the four Gospels . Nathanael means "God gave" - the meaning of this name is clear from the fact that he came from Cana , where he must have witnessed Jesus' action at the Wedding of Cana (Jn 2: 1-11).
As the Bible narrates , St. Philip communicated to Nathanael (St. Bartholomew) that he had met the Messiah , and that he came from Nazareth , to which Nathanael responds harshly and prejudiced: "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" (Jn 1:46a). This observation is an important indicator of Jewish expectations of the coming Messiah.
At his first meeting with Jesus , he receives a compliment: "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is no pretense" (Jn 1:47), to which the apostle replies: "How do you know me?" Jesus answers so that we cannot understand clearly only through the Scriptures: "Before Philip called you, I saw you when you were under the fig tree." It was certainly a critical and decisive moment in Nathanael's life. Following this revelation of Jesus, Nathanael joins the Master with the following profession of faith: "Rabbi, you are the son of God, you are the King of Israel."
According to historical sources, St. Bartholomew would have preached Christianity even in India . Another tradition says that the apostle died by skinning in Albanopolis, present-day Derbent , in the Russian province of Dagestan near the Caucasus , at the behest of the governor, so much so that in the Sistine Chapel he is painted holding his own skin in his left hand and in his other hand the instrument of his ordeal, a alfange . According to the Catholic Church, his relics were later taken to Europe and lie in Rome in the church dedicated to him.
The Pope Benedict XVI in the audience of the day 4 of October of 2006 said these words that conclude the teaching St. Bartholomew's life: "To conclude, we can say that the figure of St. Bartholomew, despite the scarcity of information about him, stands before from us to tell us that adherence to Jesus can be lived and witnessed also without performing sensational works. Extraordinary is and remains Jesus Himself, to whom each of us is called to consecrate his own life and death. "
