SAINT RITA DE CASSIA

Saint Rita of Cassia or Saint of the Impossible, as the great lawyer of the afflicted is generally known, was born in Rocca Porena, near Cassia (Italy), on May 22, 1381, with parents Antonio Mancini and Amada Ferri. The birth of the saint was preceded by wonderful signs and heavenly visions that made her parents realize something of Rita's future and providential mission, which would be placed in the world as an instrument of God's mercy for suffering humanity.           From an early age, Rita had intended to be religious, but her parents, fearing she would be alone, decided to marry her with a young man of noble family, but with an excessively violent temperament. She patiently endured such a situation for 18 years. As he had many enemies, he was murdered. The widow endured the painful loss, forgiving the killers. But in their children the desire for revenge grew. Rita asked God to take them, because it would be better than another tragedy. Thus, lost the children. Rita was free to dedicate herself to God and asked to enter the convent of Augustinian nuns in the city. But in that community only virgins could enter. Then she turned her house into a cloister, where she prayed the usual prayers of the nuns.         One night, while praying, he heard three violent knocks on his door and a voice outside said, “Rita! Rita! She opened the door and saw in front of her three, Holy Angels, who quickly led her to the Convent where she had been denied three times. The messengers let her in, even though the doors were closed, and left Rita de Cassia in one of the cloisters. Then they disappeared. The superior was fascinated by this Divine manifestation. The nuns unanimously decided to receive the widow. Admitted novice Rita began working to fulfill her wishes. Consecrated to prayer and penance, his body was then plagued. He spent his days on bread and water and nights under watch and prayer.       One day he asked with extraordinary fervor that a stigma of Jesus would appear to feel the pain of redemption. In one vision, Rita received a thorn in her forehead. The sore remained for life and one can still see it in its preserved head intact with the rest of the body.        One day a relative came to visit her, she thanked her for the visit and when she said goodbye she asked her to bring her some roses from the garden. As it was winter and had no roses, they thought that Rita was delirious and his visitor did not care about his request. As if to go home, she would have to go through the garden, and she looked and was surprised to see four beautiful roses that opened among the dry branches. Admired by the prodigy, she entered the garden, picked the flowers and took them to the Cassia Convent. At this time, Rita was very sick and died on May 22, 1457.       The next day, his body was placed in the Convent Church. All the inhabitants of the city went to worship the nun.
