Biography;
The twins were born in Aegean (now Ayas in the Gulf of İskenderun , Cilicia, Asia Minor ), and had three other siblings. His father was a martyr during the persecution of Christians in the Diocletian era . Cosme and Damião were doctors who healed the sick not only with their knowledge but through miracles provided by their prayers. [3] Their real names were Acta and Passio. [4]The twins practiced medicine in Aegean and thus achieved a high reputation. They accepted no payment for their services and were therefore called anargiras (in ancient Greek: Ανάργυροι anargyroi -?). In this way they brought many new adherents to the Catholic faith. When the persecution of Diocletian began, Mayor Lysias had Cosimo and Damian arrested and ordered them to recant. They remained constant under torture and miraculously suffered no injuries from water, fire, air, even on the cross, until they were beheaded by a sword. His three brothers Antimo, Leontius and Euprepio also died as martyrs with them. The execution took place on 27 September, probably between 287 [5] / 303. [6]
Later, a series of fabulous accounts emerged of the twins linked in part to their relics . The remains of the martyrs were buried in the city of Ciro in theSyria ; Emperor Justinian I (527-565) sumptuously restored the city in his honor after being cured of a dangerous disease by the intercession of Cosmas and Damian. Justinian rebuilt and decorated the church of the martyrs in Constantinople, which became a famous place of pilgrimage. In Rome, Pope Felix IV (526-530) built a church in his honor.
The Greek Church celebrates the feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian on July 1, October 17 and November 1, and venerates three pairs of saints with the same name and profession. Cosme and Damião are considered the patrons of doctors and surgeons and are sometimes represented by medical emblems. They are summoned in the Canon of the Mass and Litany of All Saints.. [5]
The The Old English Martyrology ( The Old Inglês Martyrology ) tells the following legend:
